Starting Your Journey

Backpacking
for Beginners

Packing Tips

Pack the Essentials

Depending on the expedition you will need to pack differently, but here are some tips to consider.

Backpacks

A 60-80l hiking backpack should do the trick with a small “daybag” that can go in hand luggage. The biggest trick is to keeping the weight down.

Camping Equipment

Depending on the trip you might need a tent, but for all expeditions you will need a sleeping bag and mattress.

Cash and cards

Chipped bank cards work in 95% of the world and you can swipe and withdraw cash as needed. Just make sure you clear the card for international travel.

Clothes & Personal Hygiene

Don’t pack big bottles of everything, keep the weight down. Most personal hygiene products are available everywhere in the world. And do you really need that extra set of clothes or are you willing to risk the sniff test….

Backpack

We recommend a pack no bigger than 65 litres (for ladies), 75 litres max (for men). Make sure it fits snugly around your waist and that it is hard-wearing and sturdy.

Daypack

A 20l-30l  small daypack is advised for the items used most often and on weekend trips.

Duffel Bag

A Duffel bag is truly a lifesaver on a journey like this. It can double up as a bag protector while you are in transit and as a laundry bag while you are stationed. Make sure that your duffel bag fits over your backpack (Preferably XL size).

Sleeping Bag

We suggest a mid-range sleeping bag for temperatures between –3 to 18 degrees. Make sure it is lightweight (900g) and small in size when packed.

Tent

Try not to exceed a weight of 3kg and rather go for a 2-man tent, as a 1-man tent does not leave space for your bags.

Shoes

We recommend comfortable walking shoes. They must be versatile and lightweight. Make sure your shoes have sturdy soles. Sandals or slops are also necessary.

Mattress

Inflatable camping mattresses are easy to find. K-Way, First Ascent and Thermarest all make great lightweight mattresses that are ideal for travel.

Pocket Knife

Optional, but it is convenient to have some kind of multi-tool for use in those unexpected moments. Remember to pack it in your checked luggage.

Sleeping Bag Inner

Gives additional heat in the cold, is cool to sleep in, in the summer nights, and keeps your sleeping bag clean.
